María E. Vázquez has a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Santiago de Compostela (2001). Until 2008 she worked as a resident Pharmacist in the Clinical Biochemistry Department, at the Universitary Hospital Puerta de Hierro in Madrid. After the residency, she worked for the Heart Failure Cooperative Network (REDINSCOR) to design and fine-tune the sequencing of genes related to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

During that time, she collaborated on various projects that allowed her to work hand in hand with Dr. Rafael Garesse, from the Department of Biochemistry, at the UAM-Institute of Biomedical Research "Alberto Sols" Madrid, and Dr. Jesús Molano, at the Institute of Medical and Molecular Genetics- Universitary Hospital La Paz, Madrid.

In 2009 she joined the Clinical Biochemistry Specialist at the HU Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda, where she participated in the opening of the Genetics Unit in close collaboration with clinical services. Her activity and clinical-research training continued with a Río Hortega contract, awarded from ISCIII, in the Rheumatology Research Group (GIR), at INIBIC.

Her incorporation in the group allowed her to participate in several projects including the Drug Discovery Galician Network (REGID) as well as the Galician Network for Colorectal Cancer Research (REGICC). During her PhD at GIR, she held scientific research stays in the Biochemistry Department of UAMIIB and the Functional Obesomics Group at the Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CIMUS).

She was awarded a PhD in Health Sciences, from UDC (2017), with the doctoral thesis entitled "Molecular characterization of osteoarthritis of metabolic origin: effect of palmitic and oleic fatty acids in an in vitro model of human chondrocytes." Currently, she holds a Postdoctoral Researcher position at GIR focused on the molecular basis of the metabolic phenotype of osteoarthritis.
