Cristina Ruiz Romero

Dr. Ruiz-Romero is a Consolidated Researcher from the Galician Health Service (SERGAS, Miguel Servet Program). She is the PI of the Proteomics Unit of GIR at INIBIC and the Tissue Bioengineering and Cell Therapy Group (GBTTC-CHUAC) at CIBER-BBN (Networked Research Center of Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine). She is a Member of the proteomics platform ProteoRed (now PRB3/ISCIII), since 2006, she was the Secretary of the Spanish Proteomics Society (SEProt), between 2015 and 2019, and is currently Member of its Board of Directors. Dr. Ruiz-Romero carried out her PhD in the Microbiology Department at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, focused on the study of cell wall integrity in yeast.

Thereafter, Dr. Ruiz-Romero became a pioneer in the development of proteomic technologies at GIR, which she joined in 2003, with the aim of applying proteomics strategies for rheumatology research, especially in the field of osteoarthritis.

Thanks to this work, she was awarded the Young Researcher Award by the International Society for Research in Osteoarthritis (OARSI), in 2008. Within this research line, she has led eleven regional or national projects aimed at the search for new biomarkers of osteoarthritis through proteomics and the development of methods for its molecular diagnosis and monitoring, attracting funding of near 1M€.

Between 2016 and 2017, she undertook a research visit in the group of Prof. Dr. Pitzalis (Center of Experimental Medicine and Rheumatology, Queen Mary University of London) that represented a kick-off point for a new line on rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this field, she is currently leading three research projects focused on the discovery and validation of novel proteomic markers to personalize pharmacotherapy. She has published 80 scientific works (64 indexed) and has an H-index of 24 (WoS).

Moreover, she is an Assistant teacher in two Master degree program from the UDC, she has directed several first degree and master final projects and supervised five doctoral thesis (two additional are in progress).
