Biography

Beatriz Caramés is the Cartilage Biology Unit Group Leader at the Institute of Biomedical Research of A Coruña (INIBIC). She attended Pharmacy School at Santiago de Compostela University. During her graduate training in GIR at Hospital Universitario da Coruña, she studied the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the development of Osteoarthritis (OA). Her publications described that these cytokines differentially increased apoptosis and compromised mitochondrial activity, thus refining an important pathogenic mechanism in OA. In 2007, after entering as a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Martin Lotz, at The Scripps Research Institute, she began a new and promising project focused on the role of autophagy in articular cartilage.

Her studies have provided the basis that autophagy plays an important role in cellular homeostasis and functions primarily to promote cellular and organismal health. In 2012, she returned to Spain and established her independent laboratory in the GIR at INIBIC. Her group focuses on discovering and functionally characterizing molecular mechanisms of articular cartilage linked to aging and OA. Her research focuses on discovering and functionally characterizing cellular mechanisms of articular cartilage dysregulated in Osteoarthritis (OA) pathology. Identification of molecular mechanisms of chondrocyte homeostasis that represent nodal points of control may create opportunities of pharmacological interventions to prevent cartilage damage and OA initiation. Beatriz Caramés also has an h-index of 15.
